Samuel Tefera Alemu (PhD) is an Assistant Professor and Asian Desk Coordinator at the Center for African and Asian Studies at Addis Ababa University. He was former Associate Dean for Research and Technology Transfer at the College of Social Sciences.
Samuel holds PhD and MA degrees in Area Studies from the Graduate School of Asian and African Area Studies at Kyoto University in Japan and a BSc degree in Land Resources Management and Environmental Protection from Mekelle University in Ethiopia.
Samuel has expertise in mobility, migration and refuge studies, conflict analysis and governance of emerging global and environmental issues. He has for long been engaged in the study of social ecological systems in pastoral and agro-pastoral areas in Ethiopia and the Horn of Africa. Samuel has led the participatory land use-planning projects and coordinated various projects dealing with climate migration, land conflict, peace building, geo-politics, One Health and cross border issues in the Horn. Samuel was Policy Advisor to the Minister, Ministry of Peace at the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia helping the policy reform activities including Disaster Risk Management, National Peace, Security and Pastoral Development policies and strategies.
Samuel writes and speaks for local and international media mainly on regional economic integration, security and hydro-political affairs. Samuel coordinates the building Resilience in Ethiopia project with Oxford Policy Management (UK). His publications mainly deal with gender and pastoralism, rangeland management, climate uncertainties, social protection and One Health He loves to travel and listen to music.
