CoRE co-lead, Professor Jo Vearey of the African Centre for Migration & Society (ACMS) at Wits University gave a talk as part of a webinar organised by the South African national statistics agency – Statistics South Africa. She highlighted the challenges in accessing healthcare that are faced by international migrants in the country which have been furthered by the action of vigilante groups trying to stop non-citizens from accessing the public healthcare services to which they are entitled. In addition to the sudden withdrawal of USAID and Pepfar funding earlier this year, the actions of these vigilante groups results in interruptions in healthcare access, including for HIV treatment or pre-exposure prophylaxis (PreP). This situation not only negatively affects foreign migrants: everyone in the country is impacted when communicable disease programmes are jeopardised.
